Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood flooring is a more affordable option for people who want the look and feel of solid hardwood floors. This type of flooring features a real wooden surface layer and plywood core to give the warmth and natural beauty of genuine wooden planks.
Engineered hardwood floors are actually easier to install, more resistant to water, and less expensive than solid wood flooring and they allow you to achieve the same look!
If you’re interested in getting some classic wooden floors to enhance your home’s decor and style, then this is definitely an option to consider.
What Is Engineered Hardwood?
To put it simply, engineered hardwood consists of stacked layers of wood veneers that are glued together. These are then cut to resemble wooden planks. There are two different wood layers: the wear or veneer layer and the core.
- Wear Layer: This is a layer of real wood that will give your floors the look and feel that you desire. There are many different species of wood to choose from that come in different colors or shades to match your home’s interior.
- Core Layer: There are different types of core layers including plywood, HDF, and SPC. Plywood is the most common and offers excellent stability and durability, HDF consists of multiple layers of plywood and is also considered one of the most stable core options. SPC cores consist of limestone and plastic so that they are extremely durable and water-resistant.
How Long Does Engineered Hardwood Flooring Last?
Engineered hardwood flooring is a popular option because it can last for many years without needing to be replaced. Its longevity depends on the thickness of the wear or veneer layer. Thinner planks can last between 20 and 30 years, while thicker ones can last up to 80 years.
The quality also makes a difference here. Cheaper engineered planks probably won’t last as long as higher-quality, more expensive ones.
Engineered flooring should have at least three layers but you should try to choose an option with at least 5 to ensure you get the most out of your floors.
Engineered hardwood floors combine a top natural wood layer with a rigid core to deliver a timeless look with moisture-resistant protection. If you’re looking for the finish of real wood with added durability, this may be the floor for you.

Engineered hardwood mirrors hardwood in so many ways. First, it delivers a natural appearance. Second, it’s available in different wood types, grades, and finishes, even more than hardwood flooring offers. Finally, engineered hardwood sturdy and durable, allowing it to last in your home for years. But engineered flooring offers more, namely better water resistance, enabling you to install it in locations like basements and kitchens where hardwood struggles because of moisture concerns. In addition, you can install engineered wood flooring easier than hardwood because you can staple, nail, float, or glue engineered wood flooring.
Engineered hardwood flooring has a layered construction. The top layer of each plank uses 100% real hardwood veneer, available in a variety of species and on-trend styles. Engineered hardwood with a plywood core uses 5 to 7 layers of plywood, crisscrossed and bonded together. The bottom layer then includes another layer of wood. Engineered hardwood with a Densitek™ Core is constructed with a 100% natural wood veneer top, Densitek™ core and 100% wood bottom.
This layered construction brings additional stability to engineered hardwood, making it less likely to expand and shift from environmental changes—and more appropriate for basements and other challenging installations.
Engineered hardwood is one of the two types of hardwood flooring Bruce® offers. The other is solid hardwood that uses a piece of 100% solid wood for plank construction.
Gabon is often called the “Woodcore of Africa,” and for good reason. Our native species offer distinct advantages for engineered flooring:
- Okoumé (Aucoumea klaineana): Lightweight yet stable, with a beautiful pinkish-brown hue and a fine, uniform texture. It is exceptionally workable and finishes beautifully, offering a unique look that is not commonly found in the U.S. market.
- Bilinga (Nauclea diderrichii): Known for its exceptional durability and resistance to wear, comparable to White Oak. Its golden-yellow to orange-red color matures into a rich, deep bronze, offering a stunning and highly durable option.
- Doussié (Afzelia spp.): Extremely hard and naturally resistant to insects and decay. Doussié boasts a beautiful color variation from reddish-brown to a purplish-brown, with a coarse texture that adds immense character.
- Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii): Famous for its vibrant, striking orange-red heartwood that ages to a rich, deep burgundy or purple-brown. It is very hard, strong, and stable, making a bold design statement.
Factory History & Key Honors:
Established in 2005 in the heart of Gabon’s sustainable forestry region, Okoume Hardwood Innovations has grown from a local milling operation into a globally recognized leader in engineered hardwood. Our journey is built on a foundation of respect for nature and a passion for craftsmanship. We are proud recipients of the “Gabonese Excellence in Export” award (2020) and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring our success also protects the prosperity of our natural heritage for generations to come.
At our state-of-the-art facility in Port Gentil, we blend Gabon’s rich timber resources with German-engineered precision machinery. Our multi-step process begins with sustainably sourced veneers, which are precision-sliced to reveal the wood’s authentic grain. These veneers are then fused to a multi-layered, cross-ply core using ultra-low VOC adhesives in a high-pressure, heat-cured press, ensuring unparalleled stability even in varying American climates. Our quality control is integrated at every stage, from moisture content monitoring to final dimensional and finish inspections, guaranteeing that every plank you receive meets the highest standards of durability and beauty, minimizing your concerns about returns and customer satisfaction.
